Bio, statement and other bits-n-bobs
In Junior High, Dan was traumatised by his art teacher. It took 10 years and 3 mortgages for him to find his happy place. Afterwards, he went to art school and never looked back. Well, except when he had to.

Born just outside London, I've studied art on both sides of the Atlantic. Having lived and shown in London, New York and now the San Francisco bay area, I'm very excited to see where this journey will go. Everyone’s motivation for creating art is different. The same is true for those viewing it. I don't believe there is any wrong interpretation of a piece of art, as everyone comes with their own experience which effects how they absorb the work. Admittedly, some work requires an Art History degree in order to absorb exactly what the artist wished to be seen, but each to their own, hey. Here’s my modus operandi:

When starting a painting, drawing, photograph or etching a plate, I don’t have a concrete goal in mind. I enjoy seeing forms relate in an organic way and I work up the piece by different amounts. Untouched paper; bare, primed canvas; items in frame, out of focus, without definition or cropped severely. I feel it mirrors us, where some parts of our lives are honed to perfection whilst other areas are never touched, double-bagged, and stuffed in back of a closet. For me, drawing is about mark making, and not just the length of the mark, but it’s width, splay and how it was applied to the surface. Similarly, laying muslin on soft ground, selecting areas for aquatints and intermixing them with firm scratches brings a plate to life. Spontaneity and a refusal to forget that the most important part of art is it's creation, keeps me happy.
